Everything you should know about NTSE (National Talent Search Exam)

National Talent Search Exam is the national-level scholarship program organised by the government of India and conducted by the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training). 

This program offers the platform for the great talent of the nation to execute their skills. This program is for students who have brilliant talent and rewarding skills.

With this exam, students of class 10 got the opportunity to become the nation’s best talent. Every year NTSE is conducted in two stages i.e. Stage I (state level) and Stage II (National level). 

The first stage of this exam is conducted by the individual states while the second stage is conducted by the NCERT.  


NTSE Eligibility Criteria 2022

According to the criteria established by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), National Talent Search Examination is open to students who are Indian nationals and studying in class X.

The eligibility criteria for appearing in the NTSE examination 2022 are:

  • Candidates who have studied in India will be selected based on their screening examination.
  • Candidates who have studied abroad but have Indian nationality are eligible to appear directly at the second level ( stage II) examination.
  • Candidates must have passed class 9 with a minimum of 60% marks.
  • The candidate must be a student of a registered school.
  • Students who are currently enrolled in an Open Distance Learning program are also eligible to apply for the exam if they are below 18 years of age on July 1, YYYY (the same year in which they appear for the exam).
  • Candidates who have passed stage I of NTSE will be eligible to appear in stage II.

NTSE Scholarship

The government of India offers NTSE scholars a scholarship of Rs 1250 per month for Class XI and XII, and Rs 2000 per month for higher studies or graduation. Scholars also receive other benefits, including:

  • NTSE scholars have a preference for the National Defence Academy Exam (NDA) organised by UPSC.
  • 15 seats for engineering will be offered to the NTSE scholars by the IIIT- Hyderabad: institute equivalent to IIT Bombay. 
  • Foreign Universities also offer admission to NTSE scholars.
  • Various Public and Private sector organisations give job preference to the NTSE scholars


NTSE Reservation Criteria as Per Category 2022

The NTSE reservation guidelines are decided by the Government of India for the Indian Nationals and Indian Nationals studying abroad.

Candidates who passed stage I of the NTSE paper and appeared for the stage II exam will come under the reservation criteria.

General category students have to score 40% marks on each paper, while reserved category students must score 35% marks on each paper to meet the reservation benefits.

Indian-origin students who are studying from a foreign board or school can directly appear for stage II of the NTSE.

Category-wise reservation :

  • For the SC category students, 15% of scholarships reserved
  • For the ST category students, 7.5% of scholarships reserved
  • For the OBC category, 27% of scholarships reserved
  • For the physically challenged 4 % of scholarships reserved

NTSE Exam Pattern 2022

The National Talent Search Exam followed in two different mediums- English and Hindi medium. Students need to select any one of the languages as per their choice. The exam is conducted in two stages - Stage I and Stage II. The question paper is divided into two sections. Each question comprises 1 Mark. There is no negative marking for the incorrect answer.

Frequently asked questions about NTSE 2022

Is there any fee for the NTSE 2022 registration?

There is no fee charged by the NCERT for the NTSE stage II exam. Whereas for the stage I exam state conducting bodies may apply some fee. This fee differs for each state. Few states conduct stage I exams free of cost.

Can class 12 students appear for the NTSE 2022?

No, NTSE is only for the students of class 10. No other standard student is eligible for the NTSE.

What is the last date to apply for the NTSE 2022 registration?

The official announcement is still awaited from the conducting bodies while speculations about the last date to register for NTSE 2022 will be in the month of October 2022.

Is there any negative marking in the NTSE?

No, there is no negative marking done for the wrong or incorrect answer. For every correct answer, 1 mark will be assigned.
